Genesis has revealed its new GV90, a fully electric luxury SUV expected to arrive in the UK in 2027, featuring a substantial 123.5kWh battery, ultra-rapid charging and, according to early reports, a price tag likely to exceed £100,000.
The GV90 represents a significant step for Genesis. Sitting at the very top of the brand's electric range, it has been designed to compete with established luxury SUVs including the BMW iX, Mercedes EQS SUV and upcoming Range Rover Electric.
While a six-figure Genesis may initially raise a few eyebrows, the specification suggests the GV90 has been developed with serious luxury ambitions.
What is the Genesis GV90?
For those less familiar with the brand, Genesis is the luxury division of Hyundai Motor Group, the same automotive group behind Hyundai and Kia.
The GV90 will become the largest and most luxurious electric SUV in the Genesis range, sitting above its existing electric models, the GV60, GV60 Magma, GV70 and G80.
At almost 5.3 metres long, with a wheelbase of more than 3.2 metres, it is larger than its Hyundai IONIQ 9 and Kia EV9 relatives and approximately the same length as a Rolls-Royce Cullinan.
Despite its size, Genesis has introduced rear-wheel steering, allowing the rear wheels to turn by up to five degrees. This should improve manoeuvrability at lower speeds and make the GV90 easier to manage in tighter spaces.
What range will the Genesis GV90 have?
The GV90 is equipped with a substantial 123.5kWh battery, currently the largest-capacity EV battery used within Hyundai Motor Group.
Early figures suggest a range of approximately 311 miles, although official UK WLTP figures are still to be confirmed.
Compared with some of the latest EVs now approaching 400 or even 500 miles of range, 311 miles from a battery of this size may not immediately stand out.
However, the GV90 is an exceptionally large luxury SUV, equipped with two electric motors, considerable performance and an extensive list of onboard technology. As a result, outright efficiency is unlikely to have been the primary objective.
How long will the Genesis GV90 take to charge?
Despite its large battery, charging times should remain relatively competitive.
The GV90 uses an 800V electrical architecture, supporting DC ultra-rapid charging at speeds of up to 350kW.
Genesis says this will allow the battery to charge from 10–80% in approximately 22 minutes when connected to a suitably powerful ultra-rapid charger.
As with any electric vehicle, actual charging speeds will depend on several factors, including the charger being used, battery temperature, state of charge and external conditions.
Nevertheless, being able to replenish such a large battery in just over 20 minutes demonstrates how quickly EV battery and charging technology continues to develop.
How powerful is the Genesis GV90?
The GV90 is expected to use a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive powertrain producing up to 647bhp.
For comparison, that puts its power output into similar territory to some considerably more performance-focused cars, including the Porsche 911 Turbo S.
It would also make the GV90 more powerful than any electric vehicle from Hyundai Motor Group to date, including the performance-focused Genesis GV60 Magma.
Alongside its electric powertrain, the GV90 features air suspension, electronically controlled dampers and rear-wheel steering, helping to balance comfort with greater control for a vehicle of its size.
What is the interior like in the Genesis GV90?
The interior is where the GV90's position as a flagship model becomes particularly clear.
At the centre of the cabin is a 23.6-inch OLED display, which can rise and expand into a larger 24.6-inch screen when the vehicle is parked, allowing it to be used for entertainment.
This is accompanied by a 25-inch head-up display and a 25-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system.
The infotainment system also introduces Genesis's Gleo AI assistant, designed to understand more natural, conversational voice commands and make it easier for occupants to control vehicle functions.
With a 3,245mm wheelbase, flat cabin floor and upright interior design, the GV90 offers a significant amount of passenger space.
Depending on specification, it will be available with either seven seats or a more luxury-focused four-seat VIP configuration.
Genesis has also placed considerable emphasis on refinement. Acoustic glass is used throughout the vehicle, supported by additional soundproofing and sound-absorbing materials to reduce exterior and road noise.
Material options include genuine stone, wood flooring and cashmere wool, alongside an extensive ambient lighting system.
The optional panoramic roof also incorporates liquid crystal technology, allowing its transparency to be individually controlled across six separate sections.
Even the windscreen includes an unusual piece of technology, using a thin metallic coating capable of defrosting the glass independently of the vehicle's main climate control system.
What is the Genesis GV90 Neolun?
The range-topping GV90 Neolun takes the luxury focus a step further. One of its most distinctive features is its large rear-hinged coach doors.
Rather than using a conventional fixed B-pillar between the front and rear doors, Genesis has integrated the structure into the doors themselves. When both doors are open, this creates a large, uninterrupted opening into the cabin.
To maintain structural strength, Genesis has developed a reinforced body structure incorporating high-strength steel tubing, structural foam and what the manufacturer describes as a concealed, robust roll cage.
The Neolun also features front seats capable of rotating through 180 degrees when the vehicle is parked, allowing front and rear occupants to face one another.
Combined with the four-seat VIP configuration, premium materials and focus on passenger comfort, it demonstrates where Genesis intends to position its new flagship.
Rather than simply competing as another premium electric SUV, the GV90 is moving towards a level of luxury traditionally associated with some of the industry's most established high-end manufacturers.
When will the Genesis GV90 be available in the UK?
The Genesis GV90 is due to go on sale in South Korea first, before arriving in Europe during the first half of 2027.
A precise UK launch date and final UK pricing have not yet been confirmed.
Early reports suggest prices could start above £100,000, placing the GV90 firmly at the luxury end of the electric SUV market.
It will be a significant test for Genesis in the UK, but with a 123.5kWh battery, 350kW charging capability, up to 647bhp and an extensive range of luxury technology, the GV90 has the specification to support the brand's ambitions.
For Genesis, the GV90 is more than simply its largest electric vehicle to date. It is a clear indication of where the brand intends to position itself as the luxury EV market continues to grow.
